Dark Interior (Votive Series)

The tradition of the heart votive dates back to antiquity and is still in use today. In Italy, votives often appear in tarnished clusters lining the dark candle lit walls of chapels or ancient grottoes. Each votive embodies a private plea or a token of gratitude for an intercession; for fertility, a safe birth or some relief from the ailments and miseries of life. The paintings in this series are a reverie on the unspoken yearning and acts of remembrance expressed within these material objects.
